Description
This is the Carmel Mission, located just 15 miles south of Monterrey, California. In addition to being one of the most beautiful of all California missions, it is also the burial site of Father Serra, who was the founder of the California mission system in the late 1700's. These missions were used to establish the control over the native population by the Spanish, and later, the Mexican Catholic church. Today, they have all been converted into state historical sites, even though religious services continue to be held there.
